The room story

A little curiosity.
A little stillness.

At 11:47 p.m., the music is low, the light is warm, and the day’s obligations can wait until morning. Sisters Amy Mobley and Katie Norrid of City Hill Design imagined The Observatory at this hour—a primary bedroom for looking around and getting lost in thought. Constellation wallpaper spans the ceiling, with lighting by John Cullen, a chandelier by Arteriors, and bedside lamps by In Common With creating the intimacy of a private retreat after dark. A purple Bon Bon light by Helle Mardahl adds an unexpected note of color, while Corston switches provide a quiet architectural detail.

A Verellen bed, fitted with a Duxiana mattress and an Amity coverlet, rests on a raised platform wrapped in brown-and-white striped silk carpet by Tai Ping, with a Burton James mohair sofa at its foot. Raw silk drapery by The Shade Store frames the windows, while Perennials grasscloth covers the walls and its fabric surrounds a copper-toned mirror. Glowing onyx side tables pair stone from Artistic Tile with fabrication by Il Granito. A limestone mantel by Francois & Co frames fireplace tile by TileBar, with artwork by Megan Hurdle above; a work by Drew Barham hangs over the bed. Butterflies by The Butterfly Guy and a greenhouse by Dallas-based Clayton Hill bring the natural world into focus. Lake Pajamas await the end of the evening, and a neon sign reads “There’s More to See,” lending a little irreverence to the setting.

Light, sky, celestial bodies, beauty, and rest informed the sisters’ choices throughout. Some references are immediately apparent; others emerge with time. Together, they create a room that encourages curiosity and leaves room for stillness—a place to notice something new, let the mind wander, and settle in beneath the stars.
